There will be an interesting battle between two South American giants in a World Cup qualifier on Thursday, as Colombia and Uruguay battle for maximum points. It promises to be a fascinating battle at this early stage of qualification.
It is still an early stage in World Cup 2026 qualification in the CONMEBOL region, but every win is vital for the sides looking to secure a place in the top six spots. Colombia come into this third match in qualifying action after making a solid start to their campaign. At present, they sit third in the overall standings after winning once across their opening two matches.
Their only win in qualification to this point was secured on matchday one, as they landed a 1-0 victory against Venezuela. However, they were unable to back up that victory on matchday two, as they played out an uneventful 0-0 draw on the road against Chile. The South American nation will be looking to get back on track this year after missing out on a place at the World Cup in 2022 after winning just five of their 18 qualification matches.
Uruguayans will already be excited ahead of the prospect of hosting the World Cup in 2030, but the focus will switch back to the major tournament before that edition on Thursday. The nation has successfully competed at the previous four editions of the World Cup, but they exited the Qatar tournament in the group stage.
Uruguay have made a decent enough start to qualification this year, as they have won once in two matches. Their only win was a fine 3-1 success against Chile in their opening match. However, a response will be needed this week as they were beaten by Ecuador on matchday two last month.
Uruguay holds the advantage in the head-to-head record, as they have won 20 of the 34 previous meetings between the nations. Over, the same period, Colombia has recorded 14 wins, with ten clashes ending in draws.
The draw could be an interesting betting angle this week, as three of the previous four have ended level since 2016. Both sides will be looking to avoid defeat, meaning that a chance will be taken on the tie in World Cup qualification.
