Colombia continue their Women’s World Cup campaign on Tuesday morning, as they bid to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in their history. Jamaica will also be looking to create history after shocking Brazil to take second spot in the group stage.
Colombia has been one of the standout nations at the Women’s World Cup this summer, and they will continue their journey in the competition in the round of 16 on Tuesday. The South American nation were excellent in the group stage, as they finished top of Group H to eliminate two-time champions Germany. Colombia won each of their opening two matches, before falling to a shock 1-0 loss against Morocco on matchday three.
Colombia will be competing at this stage of the competition for just the second time in their history. They previously reached the round of 16 in 2015, where they were eliminated by the USA. They have already made history at the competition this year, as they have become only the second South American nation to reach the knockout round in multiple editions of the competition.
Jamaica was one of the huge shocks in the group stage, as they managed to qualify for the knockout round at the expense of Brazil. The Central American nation held their rivals to a 0-0 draw on matchday three, which followed an identical result against France, and a 1-0 win over Panama. They are yet to concede at the competition this summer, and have scored just once.
This is the first time in their history that they have reached the round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup. Jamaica are also only the third nation from the CONCACAF region to reach this stage of the competition following the United States and Canada.
This will be the first ever meeting between Jamaica and Colombia at the Women’s World Cup. However, Colombia has failed to win each of their last three against nations from the CONCACAF region. Meanwhile, Jamaica is winless in two against South American opposition.
Colombia has been excellent throughout the competition, and they will be back at full strength for this showdown against Jamaica. Therefore, we find it hard to overlook the talented South American nation on Tuesday.
