The pressure will be on China as they compete in their second match in Group D on Friday. They were beaten in their opening match by Denmark, meaning that they must respond to stand any chance of progression through to the knockout round.
It was a disappointing start to the Women’s World Cup for China, as they suffered defeat in their opening match against Denmark. That loss leaves them sitting third in the standings, and only a win in this upcoming match against Haiti will give them a chance of reaching the knockout stage at the World Cup this summer. It was a cruel end to their opening match at the tournament, as the Danes scored their winning goal with just a minute remaining of the 90, meaning that China had no time to respond.
The defeat was the first that they had suffered against Denmark in four previous encounters at the World Cup. China’s attacking players will certainly feel the pressure coming into this showdown, as the nation has now failed to score in five of their last six matches at the tournament.
It would be fair to say that Haiti were one of the unlucky losers in the opening round of matches in Group D. The World Cup debutants more than held their own against reigning EURO champions England, and could have easily forced a draw in the closing stages. It was a nervy end to the game for England, with Haiti coming close on several occasions in the final 15 minutes.
However, they will have an immediate opportunity to bounce back to winning ways when they take on China this week. But, they have now lost each of their last two international matches.
This will be the first clash between these two nations, with Haiti only coming up against a nation from the AFC region on one occasion in the past two years. On that occasion, they were beaten 2-1 by South Korea in July 2022.
China were disappointing in the final third against Denmark, but they will look to play more on the front foot against Haiti. However, we could make a strong case for Haiti to land victory, as they looked vibrant and sharp in the attacking third against England on Saturday.
