Graham Potter will be hoping to ease the pressure on his shoulders this weekend, as the Blues go in search of a first league win in four games. Southampton will be the visitors, as they play their first game following the sacking of Nathan Jones.
Premier League Preview
Chelsea return to action in the Premier League this weekend, as they look to reignite their chances of a finish in a European place. The Blues currently sit tenth in the standings, but they could drop into the bottom half of the standings with a defeat this weekend. Chelsea has been in a poor run of form, as they have picked up just a single victory from their previous six. Over that period, they have been held to three successive draws.
The Blues were disappointing yet again in their league game last weekend, as they could only play out a 1-1 draw against West Ham. However, the Blues at least avoided going a third straight game without finding the net. Joao Felix opened his account for Chelsea with the opening goal in the match, but the Hammers deservedly fought back.
It’s been a busy week for Southampton, as they have fired their second manager of the season in the form of Nathan Jones. The former Luton Town boss did little to ease their position in the standings, as he departed the Saints with the club sitting rock-bottom in the Premier League. Southampton has now lost each of their previous three games.
Jesse Marsch is heavily expected to be named as the new coach before the weekend. The Saints were extremely disappointing in their most recent game against Wolves, as they failed to make a goal, and man, advantage count, losing 2-1 at St Mary’s.
Chelsea vs Southampton Head to Head
The Saints picked up a 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture between the sides this season. However, they will be looking to complete a first league double over the Blues since the 1987-88 season. Chelsea hasn’t lost back-to-back games against the Saints since December 1993.
Chelsea vs Southampton Prediction
We expect to see a much better performance from the Saints following the dismissal of Jones this weekend. However, we would be extremely surprised if Chelsea don’t manage to record a victory at Stamford Bridge. We could see Felix getting himself on the scoresheet in a 2-0 win.
