Chelsea will host Luton Town in the opening match of the Premier League weekend on Friday. The Blues are yet to register a win under Mauricio Pochettino in two outings this term, while Luton will be playing just their second match in the division following their promotion.
It has been far from the perfect start to life at Stamford Bridge for Mauricio Pochettino this term, as the Blues are without a win in their opening two matches this term. Chelsea come into this home match after suffering a defeat on the road in their previous outing, as they lost 3-1 against the ten-men of West Ham United last Sunday.
The Blues dominated the opening 45 minutes, but they went into the break locked at 1-1. West Ham were in control in the second period, and netted a third following Moises Caicedo’s foul to hand the Hammers a penalty. Chelsea registered 76% of the possession, but they managed just four shots on target. However, this will be seen as a perfect opportunity to get a first league win of the season on Friday.
Luton Town should come into this match fresher than their rivals, as they haven’t played since the opening weekend of the season. Their match against Burnley was cancelled on matchday two after a request by the club due to the work at their home stadium being incomplete.
Therefore, Luton remain without a point in the English top-flight ahead of this showdown. They were outclassed in their opening match, as they suffered a 4-1 defeat on the road against Brighton. In truth, Luton were fortunate to lose that opening match by a three-goal margin, as the Seagulls created no shortage of opportunities to extend their advantage.
This will be a first league clash between the sides since Luton landed a 2-0 home win in December 1991. The two sides have clashed on three previous occasions in the FA Cup since then, with Chelsea landing three straight wins. Their most recent success was a 3-2 win in March 2022.
There will be pressure on the hosts this weekend, as they need to land a first league win of the season. We fully expect the Blues to finally get off the mark for the new campaign, and we could see them recording a 3-0 win.
