It has been a challenging start to life at Stamford Bridge for Mauricio Pochettino. However, Chelsea will be looking to get back on track this weekend, as they welcome Aston Villa to South London.
Chelsea once again have questions to answer this weekend, as the same issues that plagued them last term have continued over the opening month of the 2023-24 season. The Blues have picked up just one win from their opening five matches, and that leaves them sitting 14th in the Premier League standings.
Pochettino would have been aware of the issues facing him before the start of the season, but they were once again glaringly obvious against Bournemouth last weekend. The Blues failed to break down Bournemouth’s low-block, and were eventually forced to settle for a goalless draw. That was the second draw that Chelsea have picked up this season, but it did end a run of two defeats in three Premier League matches. Their only win this term remains a home success against Luton.
Aston Villa will be confident ahead of this fixture on the road, as they sit seventh in the Premier League standings after five rounds of matches. The Villa have won three of their last four matches since a defeat against Newcastle United on the opening weekend of the campaign.
The Midlands side were slightly fortunate to get back to winning ways last weekend, as they edged to a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace at Villa Park. All of their goals were netted in the final ten minutes, with Douglas Luiz and Leon Bailey making sure of the victory with goals in injury time against Palace.
Aston Villa landed victory in this exact fixture last season, as they landed a 2-0 win in April. That was their first away win against the Blues since December 2011. Away victories have been a common trend in this fixture, with each of the last three being won by the side playing on the road. However, Villa have won just twice in the last 12 against Chelsea.
Chelsea’s struggles at the start of this season have been obvious once again, and that makes them challenging to support. Therefore, it could be worth siding with Villa maintaining their excellent record away from home under Unai Emery.
