Leeds United look to have bounced back from the disappointing end to last season; as they currently lead the way heading into the ninth matchday of the season. But, Marcelo Bielsa will only be too aware that they can’t be getting excited about the Premier League just yet. Let’s look at the prediction for the upcoming EFL match.
Charlton Athletic have enjoyed a brilliant return to the Championship after being promoted from League One last season. It was a turbulent summer at the club, as Lee Bowyer left before returning less than a week later. However, since his return, they have been in excellent form. They currently sit in eighth position and have no worries about a relegation battle at this moment. They have won four of the previous eight, and have only lost on two occasions.
The job that Bowyer is doing at the club is phenomenal, but a return to the Premier League couldn’t have been envisioned in their wildest dreams. However, last time out they produced a disappointing performance as they were easily beaten by Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium. The goals for the Latics were scored by Chey Dunkley. The Addicks will have to play much better on Saturday if they are to get a result.
Meanwhile, Leeds have started the season like they are on a mission, and they are the clear favorites for promotion with all sportsbooks. They have only lost once so far this season and sit top of the tree having only conceded four goals. Bielsa vowed to stay with Leeds over the summer, and he is confident that this is finally the season that the Whites make their overdue return to the top flight. They were made to rue missed chances in their last match as they were held at Elland Road by Derby County. Leeds took the lead through an own goal from Max Lowe before a 91st Chris Martin strike leveled the scores. There’s still room for improvement, but the early signs are good.
Leeds holds the dominant record in the overall head to head having won on 25 occasions. Charlton has recorded 19 wins and there have been eleven draws. This will be the first meeting between the sides since 2016. On that occasion, Charlton ran out winners, and the Addicks are unbeaten against Leeds since 2013.
Both of these sides are incredibly good going forward, but the match will likely be won by the team that can defend the best. Because of that, it’s incredibly difficult to look past a win for Leeds United.
