It has been a disappointing start to the Champions League for Celtic, as their chances of reaching the next stage of the competition already appear fairly unlikely. Atletico Madrid will be looking to extend their advantage at the top of the standings on Wednesday when they travel to Glasgow.
There will be pressure on the home side this week, as Celtic look to finally end their long wait for a victory in the Champions League. The Scottish champions currently sit at the bottom of the standings after two rounds of matches, as they have fallen to successive defeats in the competition. They have also only found the back of the net on one occasion.
It has been a different story for Atletico Madrid so far, as they already sit top of the standings after winning once in their opening two matches. The Spanish giants have scored an impressive four goals already in the group stage, but they will likely need to sharpen up defensively, having already conceded three goals in the competition.
Celtic’s record in the Champions League looks incredibly challenging to overlook ahead of this week, as they have gone eleven without a win at Celtic Park. They have also failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 16 matches with home field advantage. Only three teams in the history of the Champions League have waited longer for a home victory.
Atletico Madrid will be the clear favourites in the betting this week, and their chances of success are certainly aided by the fact that Spanish opposition has landed victories on each of their previous three meetings against Celtic following a 2-1 defeat for Barcelona in November 2012.
This will be the seventh time Atletico and Celtic have clashed in a European competition. Atletico is unbeaten in six matches against their Scottish rivals, landing victories on four occasions. The most recent of those defeats came in the 2011-12 Europa League group stage.
It looks very challenging to take on Atletico Madrid this week. Their chances are certainly aided by the fact that Celtic have won just once in their previous 23 matches in the Champions League.
