Women’s World Cup action resumed in Group B on Wednesday, as Canada and Ireland will be looking to land a first victory at the competition this summer. Both sides were unable to register victories in their opening matches, meaning that there will be pressure when they collide in Perth.
There is a wide-open feel to proceedings in Group B at the Women’s World Cup, and there will be pressure on both Canada and Ireland to register victory in their second group stage match on Wednesday. Both nations currently sit without a win in the group, with Canada being forced to settle for an underwhelming 0-0 draw in their opening match against Nigeria late last week.
However, Canada has been one of the most consistent nations at this stage of the World Cup throughout their history, as they have lost just once in seven group stage games. In fact, Canada has managed to keep clean sheets in five of their seven recent matches in the group stage. Meanwhile, they haven’t conceded a first half goal in eight matches at the Women’s World Cup group stage.
Ireland were potentially more impressive than any expected in their opening match in Group B, as they had more than enough chances to rescue a draw against Australia last week. However, they will need to be more clinical in the final third of the field this week if they are to keep alive their hopes of progression through to the next round.
That defeat against Australia means that they could become only the second nation from Europe to lose each of their opening matches at the World Cup. The only other team to have lost in successive World Cup matches in their first two games in history was Scotland in the previous edition of the tournament.
Canada has a poor record against European nations at the World Cup, as they have lost 12 of their last 14 against nations from the continent. The only matches in which they avoided defeat came in the 2015 tournament, as they held the Netherlands and beat Switzerland.
I was very impressed by Ireland in their opening match at the World Cup, and they could have easily took a point from their match against Australia. I expect another competitive performance this week, and I could see them landing a famous win.
