Cameroon will open their Africa Cup of Nations campaign on Monday when they come up against Guinea. Both nations have realistic chances of reaching the next round, but a victory for either could be huge for their chances this week in Group C.
Group C could be one of the most open early stages in the Africa Cup of Nations this year, as there is likely to be three nations competing for the top automatic spots through to the next round. Cameroon have been one of the most dominant sides in the history of the tournament after winning the competition on five previous occasions. However, their most recent success came back in 2017.
Still, they enjoyed a strong showing in their home tournament in 2021 after reaching the semi-final stage before having to settle for third. There will be questions to answer in this opening match in the group on Monday, as Cameroon come into the showdown after going two matches without a win. Each of their previous two have ended in 1-1 draws, with the latest tie coming against Zambia.
Guinea are yet to win the Africa Cup of Nations, but they are certainly a team that are beginning to knock on the door of the African elite. They have successfully qualified for each of the last two editions of the tournament, and have reached the round of 16 on both appearances. That means that they have managed to make it out of the group stage on each of their last four appearances at the major tournament.
They also come into this opening match in good confidence after winning three of their last five internationals. A standout win came in their final warm-up fixture last week, as Guinea recorded a 2-0 win over Nigeria.
Cameroon have landed seven wins against Guinea, compared to the five wins recorded by their rivals. However, the recent meetings between the nations have been dominated by Guinea, with the African side winning the last two. Their most recent win was a 2-0 success in February 2021.
One of the first big shocks in the Africa Cup of Nations this year could come on Monday. Guinea come into this opening match in excellent form, and they could be good value to claim a shock 1-0 win against Cameroon.
