Two sides at contrasting ends of the Serie A standings will lock horns in the Italian top flight on Sunday. Bologna enjoyed a strong first half to the campaign, and they will be looking to maintain that strong showing by landing maximum points against Cagliari this weekend.
The second half of the Serie A season for 2023-24 gets underway this weekend, and one of the surprise packages will be looking to maintain their excellent start when they return to action. Bologna have been one of the shock sides in Italy this term, and they come into the first game of the season half of the season sitting fifth in the overall standings.
Things could get even better for Bologna this weekend, as a victory on the road this weekend could lift them up to fourth in the table. However, they will be looking to get back on track after watching their winning run come to an end recently after going two without a victory. Their most recent match was played at home against Genoa last Friday. Fortunately, they rescued a point following Lorenzo De Silvestri’s effort in the fifth minute of injury time.
Things are looking bleak at the opposite end of the standings for Cagliari at this stage of the season, as they sit just a point and a place above the bottom three positions. The Italian side have gone four matches in the competition without a victory, and they could drop into the relegation zone with another defeat this weekend.
However, they come into the weekend after some positive recent performances, after playing out draws in each of their last two matches. The most recent of those came against Lecce last weekend. Cagliari struck back late in that fixture, with Gaetano Oristanio netting the equaliser with 20 minutes remaining.
Home wins have been extremely common when these sides have collided in Serie A. That is evident by the fact that eight of the last nine have been won by the hosts. There hasn’t been an away victory in this fixture since Bologna’s 3-0 win in October 2013.
The trend of home wins when these sides clash is hard to ignore when assessing the most likely result this weekend. Therefore, it could be worth taking a chance on Cagliari picking up a much needed maximum points.
