There was a host of goals in the top-flight in Germany over the weekend, as a new side went to the top of the league table. The pressure on Lucien Farve also increased as Borussia Dortmund lost more ground on the league leaders.
The match of the weekend came in Monchengladbach as the home side went to the top of the league with a win over last season’s Europa League semi-finalists. Marcus Thuram opened the scoring, before Oscar Wendt added a second in injury time. Frankfurt pulled one back through Danny da Costa, before the lead was restored by Nico Elvedi. Martin Hunteregger pulled another one back for the visitors, but the win was confirmed when Denis Zakaria fired in five minutes from time.
This match went in every possible direction. Omer Toprak’s own goal put the hosts ahead, before Milot Rashica and Davy Klaassen goals turned the game on its head. However, the hosts were able to rescue a point in the dying moments of the game as Lucas Alario scored. Neither side were able to push on and get the winner, but a point was probably the fair result.
Bayern Munich were made to work hard to keep pace with the teams at the top of the division on Saturday, as an unfancied Union Berlin side gave a brilliant showing. Benjamin Pavard and Robert Lewandowski goals put the hosts in complete control, before a goal from Sebastian Polter five minutes from time ensured that it wasn’t plain sailing for Bayern. They remain one point away from Monchengladbach.
