The top-flight in Germany returned last weekend with Bundesliga 2019/20 season, and all the front runners picked up some opening day wins. However, the second weekend brings with it new potential banana skins, and the credentials of possible title hopefuls will be tested.
A trip to the Veltins Arena was meant to be a potential stern test for the current champions, but they passed the examination elegantly. A hat-trick from Robert Lewandowski saw off the challenge posed by Schalke and made it two wins from two to start the season, which they hope will end with yet another Bundesliga title.
Friday night’s game saw Dortmund travel to Koln, and after a nervy first-half performance, they finally found their rhythm to bypass their opponents comfortably. Dominick Drexler put the hosts ahead after 29 minutes to give them a half time advantage. However, Dortmund came out in the excellent form in the second period, and Jadon Sancho got the equalizer to celebrate his new contract with the club. Achraf Hakimi put the visitors ahead with four minutes remaining before Paca Alcacer made sure of the three points in injury time.
It was a pulsating day of action in Hoffenheim as a red card to Werder Bremen’s Johannes Eggestein derailed any hopes of a successful away day for the traveling side. Bremen went ahead after 40 minutes through Niclas Fullkrug, before Hoffenheim produced a wonderful turnaround in the second period after goals from Ermin Bicakcic and Ihlas Bebou. Yuya Osako leveled for Bremen before a late Pavel Kaderabek goal sealed all three points for the hosts.
Two of the best young sides in the Bundesliga met on Sunday afternoon, and it was Leipzig that took all three points. Timo Werner opened the scoring before a strike from Yussuf Poulsen gave them a 2-0 lead with ten minutes remaining. Goncalo Paciencia pulled one back with one minute remaining, but it was too late to make a difference for Frankfurt.
