Luton Town make their return to the top-flight of English football for the first time in over 30 years this weekend, and their opening day assignment will see them travel to one of the standout sides from the previous campaign, as Brighton have home field advantage.
It will be a historic day for Luton on Saturday, as they mark their return to England’s top-flight when they travel to the Amex. Despite being ranked among the favourites to suffer relegation in the Championship last term, Luton managed to reach the playoff final, before defeating Coventry City at Wembley. Their progression back through the tiers in the Football League has been astounding, and there will be huge excitement ahead of their first top-flight campaign since 1991-92.
However, they needed to strengthen during the pre-season, as they clearly lacked the quality required to compete with some of the best teams in the division. The signings of Mads Andersen, Tahith Chong, and Marvelous Nakamba are all strong additions, but it’s likely that they will be battling for position at the wrong end of the standings.
Brighton enjoyed a stellar campaign in 2022-23, as they achieved a European finish for the first time in their history. The Seagulls will be looking to maintain that high performance level this term, as Roberto De Zerbi begins his first full season in charge of the club. Brighton have already lost last season’s top scorer Alexis Mac Allister, while the long-term future over Moises Caicedo remains uncertain.
Once again the club have invested throughout the summer, with first-team stars such as James Milner and Mahmoud Dahoud likely to play a key role. However, the goal scoring threat is likely to come from Joao Pedro, who signed for the Seagulls for a club-record fee from Watford.
This will be the first meeting between the sides since a 1-1 draw in the Johnstones Paint Trophy in 2009. Luton are unbeaten in five matches against Brighton in normal time, which includes a 2-1 win in League One in 2008, which was the most recent league clash between the sides.
This should be an exciting clash at the AMEX on Saturday. However, we fully expect Brighton to kick off their campaign with a resounding victory over their newly-promoted rivals.
