The race to the Premier League reaches fever pitch early next week as two of the best sides in the Championship meet in the playoff final at Wembley. But, which side will get the win that they need?
Championship Playoff Final Preview
It’s only fitting that the two best placed teams from the Championship standings meet in the playoff final this year, as Brentford and Fulham meet with huge stakes on the line. One team will be playing in the Premier League next season, while the other will have to settle for another season in the Championship. Both sides could have achieved automatic promotion in the regular season if they would have won one of their final games of the season.
However, defeat for Brentford and a draw for Fulham meant that they were destined for a place in the playoffs. Neither side have looked comfortable across both legs in their semi-finals, as both sides lost one of the legs. Brentford lost their first leg against Swansea, before coming back and winning the second leg 3-1 in their final game at Griffin Park. Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Marcondes and Bryan Mbeumo scored the goals in that victory, but they were forced to hang on as Rhian Brewster pulled a goal back with ten minutes remaining. The Bees will be looking for the win so that they can go into the Premier League with their new stadium.
Fulham would have been forgiven for thinking that their job was done after winning the away leg 2-0. However, they were also made to hang on in their second leg, as they fell 2-1 behind against Cardiff City with over 40 minutes remaining. Neeskens Kebano scored the only goal for Fulham in the fixture, but they will have to play much better in the final to see off their local rivals at Wembley.
Brentford vs Fulham Head To Head
Brentford aren’t the ideal opponent for Fulham, as they haven’t beaten the Bees for four years. During that time, Fulham have lost three times and drawn twice against Brentford. They also lost both regular season meetings this seasons without scoring a goal.
Championship Playoff Final Prediction
This is the biggest game of the Championship season, and the pressure will be on both of these sides to deliver. Brentford holds the advantage having won both times against Fulham this season, and there is a feeling that this is their time to finally gain promotion. It will be a nervy game, but Brentford will get the result that they need.
