The competitive action in Group F at the Women’s World Cup continues on Monday, as Brazil open their campaign against Panama. The South American nation could be solid contender this summer if able to transfer their form from last summer.
It promises to be a thrilling round of action in Group F, as Brazil and France will likely be battling for top spot in the standings. The South American nation open their account on Monday, and they could hold a realistic chance of landing a maiden World Cup honour based on their displays in the Copa America Femenina last year. Brazil won that regional competition for the fourth year running, but they have often struggled on the global stage.
Brazil’s best appearance at the World Cup came back in 2007, as they were beaten finalists. However, they haven’t managed to make it past the round of 16 stage in each of the last two editions of the tournament. They at least come into the World Cup in good form after winning back-to-back games against Germany and Chile.
Panama will be looking to cause an upset in the tournament this year, as they are represented at the World Cup for the first time. It has been a disappointing 12 months for the nation, as they also exited the CONCACAF Women’s Championship in the group stage after winning just once from three matches.
Their recent form would also be a very big concern, as they have lost three of their last five international matches. The last two outings would be the most concerning, as they were thumped 7-0 by Spain in June, before losing 5-0 against Japan on July 14.
This will be the first clash between Brazil and Panama. Both sides will be desperate to land victory, but the Brazilians will be the clear favourites to land maximum points in their Group F opener.
This could be a miss-match in the opening round of fixtures in Group F. Brazil appear to be far too strong for Panama on paper, and they could run out big-scoring winners to put down a marker for the tournament. Therefore, we will be siding with Brazil to land victory by a 4-0 scoreline.
