Two of the top three in the Bundesliga will clash in the German top flight this weekend. Borussia Dortmund will be hoping for an immediate response after a heavy defeat against Bayern Munich last weekend, while Union Berlin will be looking for a third straight win.
There will be a fascinating clash in the Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon, as two of the main title contenders lock horns. Dortmund’s chances of winning the league title were handed a blow last weekend, as they suffered a heavy defeat against Bayern Munich. That loss saw Dortmund drop to second in the standings, but they remain just two points off the top of the standings.
There will be pressure on the hosts to respond this weekend, as defeat will see them end the weekend in third place. Dortmund’s recent form remains very strong, as they have lost just once in their previous five. Over that period, they have collected three wins, while only Bayern has scored more Bundesliga goals this term.
Union Berlin isn’t showing any signs that their challenge for a first top-flight title is over. The minnows remain third in the standings, and they hold a six-point advantage over RB Leipzig in the race for a Champions League spot this term. Union has won each of their previous two matches in the Bundesliga, and they are unbeaten in their last four.
The German side was in excellent form in their previous match, as they recorded a deserved 3-0 home win against Stuttgart. Sheraldo Becker opened the scoring for Union in that success, while further goals were added by Kevin Behrens and an own goal by Genki Haraguchi.
Union won the reverse fixture between the sides in October, as they landed a 2-0 home win. That success ended a three-game winning streak for Dortmund in this fixture. However, Union hasn’t beaten Dortmund away from home since returning to the Bundesliga. Meanwhile, they have scored just two goals on their three visits since 2019.
This is a massive game for both German sides in their battle to challenge Bayern Munich for the title this season. We expect this to be a low-scoring fixture, as Union boasts an excellent defensive record. However, we give the narrow preference to Dortmund to claim victory.
