It hasn’t been the best season for Ajax across all competitions, but the Dutch giants remain in with a chance of reaching the next round of the Europa Conference League. They will need to win their return fixture with Bodo/Glimt to progress through to the next round.
Ajax have underperformed throughout the 2023-24 season, as they look unlikely to break into a European spot in the Eredivisie this term. Therefore, their best chance of making it into a European competition next term could come in the form of winning the Europa Conference League for the first time in their history.
However, the Dutch side will need to claim victory in this return match after playing out a 2-2 draw at the Amsterdam Arena last week. Ajax would have taken confidence from how they ended that match, as they rescued a point after netting twice in second half injury time. The dramatic equalising effort was netted by Steven Berghuis in the seventh minute of injury time.
However, it was very much a missed opportunity for Bodo/Glimt, as they found themselves 2-0 ahead after 63 minutes following two efforts from Albert Gronbaek. They played excellently on the counter-attack in that fixture, with the visitors recording three shots on target from just four efforts.
The Dutch giants have been poor on the road throughout this European campaign, losing in both England and France against Brighton and Marseille, respectively. They have also allowed a staggering seven goals in three away matches in Europe this term. If they are to have any chance of progression this week, they will need to defend much better than they have recently.
Last week’s first leg between the sides was the first time that Ajax and Bodo/Glimt have collided in a competitive fixture. However, Ajax were 2-1 winners on their latest visit to Denmark in a competitive fixture, beating Midtjylland in the Champions League in 2020-21.
This is a tie that could go either way on Thursday, as both sides have good quality in the final third of the field. However, we will be siding with the away side putting their experience in Europe to gain victory and secure a place in the next round of the competition.
