The Bundesliga action continues this weekend, as Borussia Dortmund will be looking to register a second straight victory to kick off the new season. The German giants will come up against Bochum, who were well beaten on matchday one.
Borussia Dortmund made a winning return to Bundesliga action on matchday one, as they secured a comfortable home win against FC Köln. Dortmund ended the previous season in devastating fashion, as they blew their best chance in ten seasons to win the top-flight title as they were beaten at home on the final day of the campaign.
However, they swiftly got back on track at the start of the 2023-24 season, as they landed success against Köln. It wasn’t the easiest curtain-raiser for Dortmund, as they needed to be very patient to breakdown their rivals. Their winning goal was scored with just two minutes of the 90 remaining, as Donyell Malen broke the deadlock. They will need to play better as the season progresses, but they would have been happy enough with maximum points on the opening weekend.
Bochum are also a side that will need to raise their performance levels, as they were given a stern reminder that they will need to be at their best throughout the season to remain in the top flight. The German side were handed a bruising defeat on the road by Stuttgart, as they suffered a 5-0 loss.
Bochum offered little in the final third throughout the match, as they managed just a single shot on target in reply. The German side trailed 2-0 after 38 minutes, before they allowed three goals in the second period to cap a miserable opening afternoon in the Bundesliga.
Dortmund have won four of the previous seven Bundesliga clashes between these sides since 2009. However, this exact fixture ended in a 1-1 draw in late April last season. Dortmund landed a 3-0 win in the first meeting between the sides, which was one of the final matches before the World Cup break.
Bochum will need to be much better this weekend than they were in their opening match of the season. However, we expect them to have further defensive issues against Dortmund, and we can see the away side recording a comfortable 3-0 win.
