Competitive action in Group I of EURO qualification takes place on Thursday, as Romania will be aiming to make another stride toward booking their spot at the tournament. Belarus will need a victory this week to remain in contention of a place at the competition next summer.
It has been a solid qualification campaign to this point for Romania, as they sit second in the Group I standings after winning three of their six matches. The European nation have been incredibly difficult to beat so far in qualification, as they are yet to suffer a defeat in six matches. A victory on Thursday could see them end the round of at the top of the standings.
Qualifying for the EUROs would be a standout achievement for Romania, as they have managed to compete at the tournament on just five previous occasions. Their previous appearance came in 2016, but they exited at the group stage after losing two of their three matches. However, their form this calendar year has been excellent, as they have gone six without defeat, and they have lost just once across their last nine international matches.
Belarus will have the home field advantage this week, as they look to keep alive their hopes of reaching the Germany EUROs next summer. At present, they sit fourth in the standings, but they are eight points adrift of the top two spots in the standings. However, they have won once in their six matches this term. But, defeats have been too common on their record, as they have suffered four losses.
Belarus are yet to achieve qualification to the EUROs since being part of the Soviet Union, but they have already picked up as many victories as they did in the previous qualification campaign. They have lost just once across their last three internationals, with their only win coming against Kosovo.
Romania have a fine record in this fixture, as they have won five of the previous seven encounters between the sides. Belarus are yet to land a victory against their rivals, and they were beaten 2-1 in the previous encounter between the teams in March.
Romania look to be the standout selection to land maximum points in this fixture. Victory on Thursday could leave them on the cusp of securing their spot at the EUROs, with matches against Andorra and Kosovo to come next month.
