Bayern Munich made a strong start to the new Bundesliga season on the opening weekend, and they will look to continue that momentum. Augsburg are the first visitors to the Allianz Arena in 2023-24 on Sunday.
There were doubts surrounding Bayern Munich ahead of the opening weekend, as the reigning champions were easily beaten in the Super Cup by RB Leipzig. However, any doubts questioning whether Bayern were the force of old this term were answered on matchday one, as they easily strolled to maximum points on the road against Werder Bremen.
Harry Kane was handed a first start following his move from Tottenham Hotspur, and the England captain was excellent throughout. He set up the opening for Leroy Sane, before opening his account for the German giants with 15 minutes remaining. The scoring was completed in the final five minutes following another effort from Sane and a goal for Mathys Tel. Bayern will be looking to put on a show for their home fans this weekend.
Augsburg were involved in one of the most dramatic opening day matches in Bundesliga history last weekend, as they shared eight goals with Borussia Monchengladbach. Augsburg drew level at 3-3 on the stroke of half time through Sven Michel, before Ruben Vargan put them into the lead with just 14 minutes remaining.
However, they wasn’t able to hang on to secure a dramatic win, as Gladbach were awarded a dramatic penalty in the seventh minute of injury time. The spot kick was subsequently converted by Tomas Cvancara. Defensively, Augsburg made no shortage of mistakes in that draw, but there were clearly signs of attacking quality that was missing throughout the 2022-23 season.
Bayern Munich have dominated the recent clashes between the sides, as they have won 22 of the previous 29. Augsburg have picked up just five wins, with two clashes ending in draws. Interestingly, each of the last five have been won by the team with home field advantage, with Bayern picking up three wins and Augsburg landing two victories.
Bayern will be expected to put on a show in front of their home fans for the first time this season on Sunday. We fully expect the Bavarian giants to claim maximum points, and we could see Kane getting at least one goal on his first start at his new home.
