The two sides that will be considered favourites to progress through Group C in the Europa League will meet on the opening night. But, will it be Bayer Leverkusen or Nice that takes the three points?
It has been a stuttering start to the new Bundesliga season for Bayer Leverkusen, as they have won just once in their opening four games. However, they would have certainly take confidence from the fact that they haven’t been beaten yet. Alarmingly, they have really struggled in front of goal over the opening weeks of the season, as they have scored just three goals in four Bundesliga games. Only Schalke and Mainz have scored fewer goals than that total. Leverkusen do come into this game having won their last fixture in the Bundesliga against Mainz. It was probably their best performance of the season, with Lucas Alario scoring the only goal of the game after half an hour. They dominated the possession in that win, as they had 62% of the ball. They also didn’t allow Mainz to have a single shot on goal in that win.
Meanwhile, Nice has enjoyed an excellent start to the Ligue 1 season, as they have won four of their seven games. Nice have lost just twice in their seven games to this point, but will come into this fixture after going three games unbeaten. Nice have won their last two games in Ligue 1, with these victories coming against Nantes and St Etienne. The latter of these was their last game in France, and they ran out 3-1 winners on that occasion. Pierre Lees-Melou, Amine Gouiri and Myziane Maolida scored the goals in that recent win. Their form will be a strong signal that they could get another win in Germany this week.
Santiago Arias, Patrik Schick and Paulinho will be missing for the hosts for this fixture in the Europa League. Meanwhile, the travelling side will be without Kasper Dolberg, Alexis Claude Maurice and Youcef Atal.
These two sides will likely be finishing in the top two places in this Europa League group. However, both sides will be keen to finish top to avoid a more difficult path in the knockout rounds. Nice have been in excellent form over recent weeks, and it would be hard to bet against them against a struggling Leverkusen side.
