The race to the Europa Conference League final continues on Thursday, as Fiorentina will be looking to keep alive their dreams of two pieces of silverware. However, they have a tough assignment on their hands after losing the opening clash in Italy against Basel last week.
One of the tournament favourites for the Europa Conference League will have a challenge on their hands this week, as they bid to overturn a first leg disadvantage on the road. Fiorentina have been one of the standout teams in the competition throughout the season, but their poor domestic form has been transferred to the Europa Conference League in recent weeks.
Defeat in the first leg means that Fiorentina have now won just once in their previous four in all competitions. That victory was picked up in their most recent league match, as they registered a 2-0 home win over Udinese. However, they will need to raise their standard of performance based on their poor performance in Italy last week.
Fiorentina was stunned in Florence last week, as they saw their 1-0 lead wiped away by Basel. The Italian side took the lead after 25 minutes following Arthur Cabral’s opener. However, FC Basel played their way into contention in excellent fashion in the second period. They levelled the scores after 71 minutes through Andy Diouf, before the dramatic winner was netted in the 92nd minute by Zeki Amdouni.
Basel will now believe that they can reach the Conference League final, as the hard work was done in the first leg in Italy. They will simply need to avoid defeat to reach the final of the competition and set up a showdown with either West Ham or AZ Alkmaar.
This will be the fourth clash between the two sides. Basel is unbeaten across the previous three, recording both of their wins away from home over this period. The previous clash between the sides in Switzerland ended in a 2-2 draw in November 2015.
This is a huge challenge for Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League on Thursday. They are winless in their previous three against Basel, and that sees the hosts stand an excellent chance. For that reason, we can see the Swiss reaching the Europa Conference League final on Thursday.
