Barcelona vs Villarreal Prediction: La Liga Match on 27.09.2020

Barcelona will be able to respond to the disappointment that they needed to overcome last season this weekend as they return to action in La Liga. But, can they get off to the best possible start?

La Liga Preview

It has been an eventful summer at the Nou Camp, with much of the talk surrounding the club coming off the field. The majority of the summer consisted of the club trying to ensure that they didn’t lose Lionel Messi on a free transfer. At one point it almost seemed a certainty that the legendary player would be leaving the club, but in the end Messi decided to stay at the club as he didn’t want to go into a legal battle.

However, there have been a number of players that have been allowed to leave the club, with Luis Suarez, Nelson Semedo and Ivan Rakitic departing the Nou Camp. There is already huge pressure on Ronald Koeman before a ball has even been kicked, which means he can’t start the season with a defeat at home to Villarreal. There could be a Barcelona debut for summer recruit Miralem Pjanic, while Philippe Coutinho could make his first La Liga start for over a year.

Villarreal have started the season in decent form, and they are unbeaten in two games. The travelling side this weekend currently sit in third place in La Liga, and won their first game of the season in their last outing. Villarreal beat Eibar in their last league game, but they didn’t have it all their own way, as they needed to come from behind to take the three points. The Villarreal goals in the win were scored by Gerard Moreno and Paco Alcacer. This could be a great chance for Villarreal to lay down a marker for the season ahead.

Barcelona vs Villarreal Head To Head

Villarreal haven’t beaten Barcelona in 12 years, with their last win coming at the Nou Camp in 2008. Barcelona have won six of the previous seven in La Liga, which includes the double that they achieved last season. Barcelona won the game at the Nou Camp last season 2-1.

Barcelona vs Villarreal Prediction

There is already huge pressure on Barcelona before a ball has even been kicked this season. They have to win this opening game to ease that pressure slightly, and they should have the quality to edge the win.
