Barcelona in Contention to Sign Cody Gakpo

Barcelona has joined the race for the Dutch starlet Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old footballer who currently plays for PSV has been on the radar of numerous top European teams including Manchester United, Arsenal and Bayern.

During the 2022 summer transfer window, numerous English clubs wanted to sign him including Leeds and Southampton. However, the transfer failed to materialize.

Widely regarded as one of the best youngsters, Cody Gakpo made his debut for PSV in 2018 at the age of 19. He made a breakthrough in the past season. Gakpo has already managed to score 13 goals in 18 appearances. He is in perfect shape and scored against Poland in the Nations League.

Gakpo mainly plays on the left wing but also prefers moving to a central position. With his dribbling skills, speed, and pass accuracy he creates a lot of threats for the opposing side.

Barcelona Will Benefit From the Transfer

It would be a great addition to Barcelona, which has a hard time. The club is on the verge of elimination from the Champions League group stage twice in a row. This would affect the club financially and shake its reputation. Furthermore, both Ferran Torres and Memphis Depay are struggling.

During the summer transfer window, the Catalan club worked actively, signing top-class players including Robert Lewandowski and Jules Kounde. Currently, Gakpo has a transfer fee of 35 million EUR and it could rise following his recent performances. 

PSV Wants to Retain Gakpo

PSV currently do not contemplate their star player. Gakpo has a contract until 2026, but the club may change the decision depending on the offer they receive from Barcelona. There are some chances he might leave during the winter transfer window.

Gakpo’s ultimate goal is to play at the World Cup in November. The player has 3 goals in 9 matches and following the injury of Memphis Depay he could end up in the final squad.

The Dutch player has not said anything so far regarding his future. He will have time to choose the most suitable option and Gakpo himself wants to fight for higher goals.
