The second leg in the SPL playoffs takes place this week, as the two sides involved clash for the second time with a place in the playoff final up for grabs. The advantage is firmly with Partick Thistle coming into the return match, as they landed a comfortable 3-0 success in the first clash between the sides last Friday. 

Partick were extremely comfortable throughout that fixture, and they probably should have won by a wider margin in front of their home fans. Jack McMillan opened the scoring in the fixture after just 16 minutes, before two second half goals were added by Brian Graham. Partick ended the night having registered 19 shots, with six hitting the target. Only a disaster in the second leg will see them avoid reaching the playoff final.

Ayr United may have the home advantage for the second leg on Friday, but they face an almighty challenge if they are to reach the playoff final. They will need to overturn a 3-0 disadvantage, which looks incredibly unlikely based on their performance in the first leg. In that fixture, they managed just three shots on target, but they didn’t really cause many issues for the Partick backline. 

That was an unlikely collapse by Ayr, as they had gone into the playoffs in excellent recent form after going five without defeat. But, they have recorded just two victories from their previous five matches in the Scottish Championship.

Ayr’s last win in this fixture was recorded back in October 2022, as they registered a 4-2 win.
