Every game could be crucial in Group F for the chasing pack, as three nations will be hopeful of finishing second behind Belgium. Austria will be one of those nations in the hunt, and they compete in qualifying action on Monday evening against Estonia.
Austria will likely be favourites to take second spot in Group F in qualification, but they will need to start quickly if they are to achieve that goal. The nation has reached the major tournament in three of the previous four editions, and they put on an extremely bold showing in the previous edition, as they reached the round of 16.
Austria won six from ten matches in their previous qualifying campaign, and they had an excellent ability to score goals, registering 19. However, they will be looking to get back on the right track in qualification after a disappointing 2022 in terms of performances. They won just once in six Nations League matches, which saw them relegated back to Division B. However, they picked up back-to-back wins at the end of last year, which includes a fine 2-0 success against Italy.
Estonia has never previously qualified for a major international tournament, but they did catch the eye at stages when attempting to reach EURO 2016. In that qualifying phase, they won three of their ten matches. However, in the previous qualifiers they were extremely poor, as they lost seven of their eight matches.
They should come into qualifying in good spirits after enjoying a fine campaign in the Nations League last year. Estonia won all four of their matches to top Group D2, and they allowed just two goals. However, this is a much harder challenge on Monday evening.
Austria has a perfect record against Estonia based on the previous two meetings between the sides. However, both previous encounters between the nations came back in 1997, with the latest of those being won 3-0 by Austria.
It looks as though Austria are back on track after a disappointing qualification campaign for the World Cup. We don’t expect them to have many issues in this second group stage game on Monday evening, and we could see them running out 3-0 winners against an Estonia side that has struggled against top opposition.
