It is a match that nobody really wants to be involved in, but the bronze medal winners in the women’s football will be decided on Thursday morning. Reigning world champions, the United States will take on Australia in Tokyo.
The Olympics haven’t gone as well as the United States would have been hoping for, as they would have been expecting to compete in the gold medal match. As the reigning world champions, the USA were many people’s picks to win the gold this summer, but they have flattered to deceive throughout the competition. They narrowly avoided a scare in the group stages, as they picked up just four points from the three games that they played. A 6-1 win against New Zealand did little to hit their shortcomings, as they were beaten by Sweden 3-0 in their opening game, and held to a 0-0 draw by Australia in their final group game. They needed a penalty shootout to edge past the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, before they were made to pay for being wasteful in the semi-finals against Canada. The United States squandered numerous chances in that game, and were eventually beaten by their local rivals for the first time in ten years after Canada scored from the spot.
Australia will certainly come into the bronze medal match in good confidence, after holding the United States to a 0-0 draw in the group stages. Their only win during that phase came in a 2-1 success against New Zealand, while there were also beaten by Sweden. Australia were involved in potentially the game of the tournament in the quarterfinals, as they managed to overcome Team GB 4-3 in extra time. They looked to be heading out of the competition, before finding the equalising goal with five minutes remaining. However, they weren’t able to make the final stride to reach the final, as they were beaten by Sweden 1-0 in their semi-final.
Australia are yet to beat the USA in four previous meetings. The draw that they picked up earlier in the Olympics was the second stalemate that they have achieved against the Americans. However, USA have won on two previous occasions, with their most recent win coming in 2019.
Australia would feel that they have surpassed expectations to reach this stage of the competition. However, the preference to pick up the bronze lies with the Americans, who will definitely feel that they have a point to prove.
