Both Augsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach endured difficult campaigns in 2022-23, as both were locked toward the bottom of the standings for much of the campaign. However, both sides will be looking for a solid start to the new season on Saturday.
Borussia Mönchengladbach were one of the most disappointing sides in the Bundesliga last term, as they could only finish tenth in the league standings. They were far too easy to play against, and there have been drastic changes throughout the summer. Daniel Farke was given his marching orders by the club, and he has been replaced by Gerardo Seoane.
The new boss will be tasked with getting Gladbach back into the European spots, but that could be a challenging task based on their performances last term. The team have spent money this summer to overturn their fortunes, with Tomas Cvancara, Fabio Chiarodia, and Franck Honorat among their big name arrivals. They played their first domestic game of the new season last weekend, recording a 7-0 win over Bersenbruck in the DFB Pokal. Honorat and Cvancara both scored twice on their debuts.
Augsburg also finished in the bottom half of the standings last term, as they finished the campaign in 15th place overall. Much more will be expected of the season this term, and Enrico Haassen will be hopeful that enough business has been done off the pitch to make them more competitive on the field.
Their big arrival has been Mergim Berisha, who signed from Fenerbahce, while Tim Breithaupt and Messaya Okugawa both strengthen the options in the middle of the field. However, they will need to bounce back to form quickly after they were dumped out of the DFB Pokal in the opening round last Sunday after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Unterhaching.
Gladbach won the previous clash between these sides in May 2023. However, each of the previous five meetings between the sides have been won by the side with home field advantage. That includes three wins in a row for Augsburg in home matches against Gladbach.
Augsburg’s record in this fixture is very eye-catching. However, we will be siding with Gladbach to put their disappointments from last season behind them by landing a victory on the opening day against their rivals on Saturday.
