What a game we have in store from the Spanish La Liga on Sunday as Atletico and Real meet in the latest instalment of the Madrid Derby. As is always the case when these old rivals meet, an entertaining game is expected with both teams aiming for the win needed to strengthen their chances of winning the league title.
This will be the second meeting of the Madrid sides this season and Real are hoping to do the double over their opponents. Blancos claimed an impressive 2-0 win on their patch back in December with the goals scored by Casemiro and a Jan Oblak OG. Will we see more of the same or will the home team get their revenge and take a step closer to the trophy?
Atletico Madrid entered the week sitting top of the La Liga table on 58 points, five more than nearest rivals Barcelona. They started the campaign as surprise leaders but have proven themselves to be worthy and credible title challengers during the campaign. Stats of 18 wins and four draws against two defeats sets the pace but they have won only two of their last five games.
Madrid’s most recent form reads draw, lose, win with the victory coming over Villarreal on the road last weekend. That was a timely and crucial win that helped restore confidence in the squad after suffering a 2-0 defeat at home to Levante in La Liga. They were also beaten 1-0 by Chelsea at this venue in the Champions League.
Real Madrid won the title from Barcelona last season after swooping to a late finish. They defied the odds with that victory, but many expected them to retain their title this season as Barca go through a period of transition. They remain in the hunt for two-in-a-row but there’s plenty of work still to do if they are to get there. This looks to be a must-win match for Real to keep their chances alive.
They took their recent form to four wins on the bounce earlier this month when beating Real Valladolid 1-0 away from home. Mendy scored the only goal of the game when finding the net on 65 minutes after Freuler had been sent off. They followed that with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Atalanta in the Champions League Round of 16. Fans would love to see another 1-0 victory.
Real Madrid took the points when these teams last met but Atletico have the home advantage, are top of the league and know victory here would move them closer to the trophy. This has all the ingredients of a classic and it could prove to be the best game of the week in Europe.
Atletico Madrid are 2.79 with Real Madrid 2.565 and the draw 3.28.
