The Champions League gets back underway this coming week, as the reigning champions travel to the stadium where they achieved their sixth honour. Liverpool will be hoping to become only the second side in the modern era to reclaim their title, while Atletico will be hoping that they can make home advantage count.

It hasn’t been the best of seasons for Diego Simeone and his Atletico Madrid side to this point. They find themselves locked in a battle to achieve a Champions League finish in La Liga, and the majority of their problems are in the attacking third after they failed to replace Antoine Griezmann with a natural finisher. They have scored just 25 goals this season, which is the lowest amount of any side in the top half of the league.
Atletico will go into this fixture having won just once in their last five. Their last outing was against Valencia, where they were held to a 2-2 draw. They twice took the lead in that fixture, before they eventually conceded a late equaliser to settle for a point.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are the most in-form side in Europe this season as they are unbeaten in 43 games in the Premier League. They are just six games shy of the record set by Arsenal, and one more win in the league would see them tie Manchester City for the most consecutive wins in the top-flight. They go into this fixture in Madrid off the back of a hard-fought 1-0 win against Norwich City. The only goal of the game on that occasion was scored by Sadio Mane. This will be a much bigger test, but on current form, it would seem impossible to bet against Liverpool.

Head To Head
This will only be the fifth meeting between these two sides, with the most common outcome being a draw. There have been two draws between the sides, while both teams have recorded a win. The last meetings between the two came in the 2009-10 Europa League, where Atletico went on to win on away goals.
Atletico Madrid Team News
Joao Felix and Diego Costa will be missing for the home side, while Kieran Trippier will also be out. Hector Herrera and Dario Poveda are also missing for the hosts.
Liverpool Team News
The Reds have no first-team injury concerns. The only players that are missing are Xherdan Shaqiri and Nathaniel Clyne.
Atletico vs Liverpool Prediction
Atletico’s recent struggles this season show that they aren’t the same team that reached two finals in four seasons. Liverpool will be optimistic of qualification but may take the draw from the first leg away from home.
