Athletic Bilbao will be looking to recover this weekend after dropping to defeat in their previous fixture. Girona will be the visitors on Saturday, as they will be looking to pick up a third win in four games.
Athletic Bilbao remains in the hunt for a place in a European spot this term, but it would appear as though they will have too much to do to claim a Champions League spot in La Liga. However, they could move up to sixth in the standings with a victory this weekend. Bilbao has picked up two wins from their previous three matches, but they do come into this fixture after losing their most recent match.
Bilbao’s defeat last weekend was suffered on the road against Atletico Madrid. There wasn’t a great deal wrong with their performance in that defeat, as they defended well throughout. However, they appeared to lack a spark in the final third of the pitch, registering just two shots on target. This looks like a much more winnable game this weekend.
Girona is currently sitting pretty in the middle of the La Liga standings. They will still be wary of what’s going on behind them, as they are just five points above the bottom three. However, a victory this weekend would lift them up to tenth in the standings.
They come into this fixture in relatively solid form, as they have picked up two wins from their previous three matches. Their most recent win was picked up last weekend, as hammered Almeria 6-2 at home. Six different scorers found the back of the net in that win, including Rodrigo Riquelme, Javi Hernandez, and Ivan Martin.
Girona picked up a 2-1 win in the reverse fixture between the sides this season. However, Bilbao hasn’t lost two games against the same newly promoted side in a single La Liga campaign since 2011-12. Bilbao has won each of their previous two home matches against Girona, keeping a clean sheet in both.
Girona performed well in the previous meeting between the sides this season. However, Bilbao would be the pick to claim the points this weekend, as they have a fine home record against their rivals on Saturday. We could see the hosts picking up a 2-0 win.
