It has been a strange season in La Liga this year, with many of the best sides in the division underperforming. The shortcomings of Atletico Madrid have left the door open for one side to pounce in the battle for a place in the Champions League next season. One team that has grabbed that opportunity with two hands has been Getafe, as they have emerged as shock contenders for a top-four spot. They can increase their chances this weekend with a win over Athletic Bilbao.
It has been an excellent start to the season for Getafe, as they have only been beaten on five occasions this season. They sit in fourth spot at present and are above Atletico Madrid on goal difference. They can improve their chances of a top-four finish this weekend when they take on Athletic Bilbao. They go into the game in the best possible form as they have won their last two.
Those wins have come against Leganes and Real Betis, and they have scored four goals in those two games and haven’t conceded once. Their last outing in La Liga was a 1-0 win over Betis, with the only goal in the match being scored by Angel Rodriguez in the final minute.
Meanwhile, Bilbao have been in strange form over recent weeks as they haven’t been beaten in their last five, but they also haven’t won during that run. They have registered five draws on the bounce in La Liga. Their last draw came against Espanyol, where the two teams shared a 1-1 draw. Bilbao thought they had done enough for all three points after Asier Villalibre gave them the lead after 12 minutes. However, they were unable to hold on to their lead as Raul de Tomas equalized for the hosts with 20 minutes remaining. They will need to play much better to stop the in-form Getafe.
The two sides have met on 26 previous occasions, with Bilbao holding the advantage of winning on ten occasions. Getafe have registered six wins in the previous meetings, and there have been ten draws. Bilbao average 1.1 goals per game and Getafe average 0.8.
Bilbao will be without Oscar de Marcos, Cristian Ganea and Artiz Aduriz for the clash. They could have Daniel Vivian back on the bench.
Markel Bergara is the only absentee for the visitors. They could have Filip Manojlovic and Kennedy back on the bench.
The form of Getafe has been very impressive over recent weeks, but Bilbao have been a very hard team for sides to break down. This will be an entertaining game with both teams finding the back of the net. But it is difficult to pick a winner.
Prediction: Both teams to score.
