Athletic Bilbao and Cadiz have both made reliable starts to the new La Liga season, and both could move into the Champions League spots this weekend with a victory in the Spanish top-flight. However, which team will claim maximum points?
Last season was a slight disappointment for Athletic Bilbao, but they have quickly put the 2022-23 campaign behind them. Bilbao have started the new season in excellent form, as they have won two of their opening four matches, and they are unbeaten in three since the opening day of the season.
However, Bilbao weren’t able to pick up a third straight win before the international break, as they were held to a goalless draw on the road by Mallorca. Bilbao had the better of the action in that fixture, as they had 67% of the ball, and registered three shots on target. But, their wastefulness in front of goal was a huge concern, and they will need to be more efficient this weekend.
Cadiz will also be delighted with their start to the season this term, as they currently sit sixth in the standings. Like Bilbao, they have won two of their opening four matches. They have bounced back well since losing on matchday two, as they have gone two without a defeat.
Cadiz was excellent in their most recent match, as they secured maximum points in front of their home fans against Villarreal. Their chances were increased after their rivals were reduced to ten men after 22 minutes, but a brace from Darwin Machis put them on their way to a comfortable victory. Chris Ramos also scored in the comfortable home win over their rivals.
Bilbao have an excellent recent record in this fixture, as they have won each of their last three against Cadiz. That includes a 4-1 win in this exact fixture last term. They have scored at least three times in three of their previous four encounters against Cadiz.
Both of these sides have made progressive starts to the new La Liga season. However, Bilbao’s excellent record in this fixture is challenging to overlook, and we could see them bouncing back from their draw before the international break by claiming maximum points on Saturday.
