Domestic action resumes in Spain on Friday, as Athletic Bilbao will be looking to maintain the form they have started the new season in. The Spanish club will welcome Almeria to Bilbao, as the traveling side looks for a second win of the season.
It has been a fine start to the new La Liga season for Athletic Bilbao, and they will be hoping that the recent international break hasn’t stifled the momentum that they were building in Spain since the opening day. Bilbao comes into this fixture sitting fourth in the standings, as they have won four of the six fixtures that they have played.
Victory on Friday would be enough to lift them up to third for at least 24 hours. They come into the fixture in good form, as they have picked up wins in each of their previous two fixtures in La Liga. The most recent of those was a dramatic 3-2 victory against Rayo Vallecano. Bilbao stretched into a 3-1 lead after just 33 minutes of that match, despite conceding the first goal. Goals for the home side in that fixture were scored by Inaki Williams, Oihan Sancet, and Nico Williams.
Almeria come into this fixture in very weak form, as they have lost each of their previous three fixtures in La Liga. That form will be a big disappointment for the Spanish side, as they had lost just once in their opening three fixtures to the season. However, they will be aware that another defeat this weekend could see them drop into the bottom three.
Almeria’s latest defeat was suffered on the road before the international break. Mallorca were the side to claim three points in that fixture, as they broke the deadlock after 25 minutes. Almeria did threaten to get back into the fixture, but they just couldn’t find a way through.
Bilbao has a very good record against Almeria in matches played in La Liga since 2008. They have lost just twice in the previous eleven meetings, which includes victories in the previous two fixtures between the sides.
Bilbao’s excellent start to the new season makes them a very solid pick for this fixture in La Liga on Friday. We can’t see them having too many problems against a struggling Almeria, and a 2-0 win could be the most likely outcome.
