Atalanta were handed a first defeat of the new season last weekend, but they will quickly be looking to get back on track this Saturday, as they play host to Monza. Both sides will be looking to go into the international break on a high.
Atalanta had huge confidence before the start of the season that they could force their way back into a Champions League spot this term. However, those chances were dealt a slight blow on matchday two, as the Italian side suffered a first defeat of the new season. The loss leaves them down in eighth place, but they will be confident that they have the quality to bounce back this weekend.
Atalanta’s winning start to the new season was halted on Saturday afternoon, as they fell to a shock 2-1 defeat on the road against newly promoted Frosinone. The Italian side went into the break 2-0 down, but threatened to get back into the contest after Duvan Zapata found the back of the net with just over half an hour remaining. However, they weren’t able to find a second goal in the remaining time.
Monza sit just a place below Atalanta in the current standings after they responded to defeat on the opening day by claiming victory on matchday two. It was an excellent response as they aim to better their finish in Serie A from last term.
It was a professional display by the hosts on that occasion, as they quickly took the game away from Empoli by netting twice in the space of eight second half minutes. Both efforts in the victory were registered by Andrea Colpani, who promises to be a huge player at Monza in their push up the league standings this term.
Atalanta were routine winners in both clashes against Monza in Serie A last term. The Italian side landed a 2-0 away win in the first meeting between the sides in September, before they followed up that success with a 5-2 win in this exact fixture in June.
The fact that Atalanta won their fixtures against Monza with ease last season can’t be overlooked. However, we could see another high-scoring fixture between these sides on Saturday, with over 2.5 goals a likely betting angle. However, the narrow preference is for Atalanta to land maximum points.
