A season-defining period for Aston Villa kicks off on Friday, as the West Midlands giants welcome Sheffield United. The Villa could move to the top of the Premier League standings for at least 24 hours if they pick up maximum points in front of their home fans.
Aston Villa have made a stunning start to the 2023-24 season, and they are already among the clear favourites to secure a Champions League finish this term. However, they could surpass expectations by mounting a title challenge. The Villa could move to the summit on Friday evening if they are able to record a fourth straight success in the competition against the Blades.
Sheffield United come into the latest round of matches sitting rock bottom in the standings after losing 13 of their 17 matches in the competition this term. The Blades have won once in three matches since Chris Wilder returned to the club, but they were given a stern reminder of the task that they face after suffering a defeat on the road against Chelsea last Saturday.
An improvement will be required based on that performance at Stamford Bridge, as the Blades didn’t string together much in the final third of the field. It will be an increased test against one of the most in-form sides in Europe this weekend, especially given Villa’s dominant home record.
The West Midlands side have won a club-record 15 straight matches at Villa Park in the Premier League. Only three clubs have enjoyed longer winning sequences in home matches in the history of the competition. Villa have also impressed in Friday night matches in the Premier League, winning each of their last two.
Villa have an impressive record against the Blades, as they are unbeaten in their last 14 against United at Villa Park. Over that period, they have recorded eight wins, with six ending in draws. However, the Blades have managed to keep clean sheets in three of the last four Premier League meetings between the sides.
Villa’s date with destiny arrives on Friday, as Unai Emery looks to guide the side to the top of the standings. In truth, they appear incredibly challenging to oppose in front of their home fans, and we fully expect them to extend their long winning sequence at Villa Park by landing victory against the Blades.
