AS Roma have work to do if they are to reach the next round of the Europa Conference League this season. Jose Mourinho’s side are currently in second, and trail Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt.
Top spot will be important for Roma in the Europa Conference League, as it will mean an immediate passage through to the round of 16. However, if they finish in second, they will need to play a knockout round fixture to reach the same stage. At present, they will be dropping into that playoff, as they are in second place in the group.
It hasn’t been the easiest group campaign for the Italian giants, as they have won just half of the games that they have played. Mourinho also suffered the embarrassment of losing the biggest game of his career in Norway earlier in the campaign, as Roma lost 6-1 to Bodo.
However, they can still reach the top of the group, but they will likely need to win both games that they have to play in the group. Roma were comfortable winners the last time that they came up against the Ukrainian side, as they won 3-0.
Zorya may yet still feel that they can finish the group in second spot. However, to stand any chance of that, they need to take at least a point from this fixture on Thursday. At present, they are a point behind the Italian giants, and they close they group campaign with a home fixture against Bodo.
Zorya have won two of the four games that they have played, but have also been beaten on two occasions. They have conceded six goals so far, which is the second best defensive record after the group leaders. However, they have scored just four times, which is eight fewer than both Roma and Bodo.
Gonzalo Villar, Bryan Cristante and Riccardo Calafiori are among the players missing for Roma this week. Matias Vina is also expected to miss out through a muscle injury, but could be back in time for the game this weekend. Zorya have no fresh injury concerns to contend with.
Zorya have been in great form in the Europa Conference League this season, but we can see the gallant effort for a place in the knockout rounds come to an end this week. The preference is for the Italian hosts.
