Jose Mourinho suffered a first defeat since returning to Serie A last weekend, but he will be hoping for a response from his Roma side when they host Udinese in the Italian top-flight on Thursday.
It had been an excellent return to the Serie A for Mourinho with Roma, but a shock defeat last weekend now means that the club will be looking to get back to winning ways and back into Serie A’s top four. It was yet another entertaining fixture involving Roma, but they were eventually beaten 3-2 by Hellas Verona. Lorenzo Pellegrini had given Roma the lead in the first half, and Roma were then handed an equaliser at 2-2 through an own goal. However, Verona pushed on and scored the winner. Mourinho will be hoping for a response from his team as they return to their home stadium on Thursday, and a win could potentially lift them up to second place depending on the other results in Serie A this week.
Udinese could move above Roma in the league standings if they beat their rivals on Thursday evening. They come into this fixture two points behind Mourinho’s side, and will also be looking to respond after losing their last league fixture. Defeat in their last game ended a run of three unbeaten to start the season, which also included back-to-back wins. However, that strong run of form was halted on Monday evening, as they were easily brushed aside by the in-form Napoli. Udinese had no answer in that fixture, as they managed just a single shot on target and had just 37% of the possession. It could be another difficult evening against one of the other sides chasing Champions League football on Thursday.
Udinese have picked up just one win against Roma in the last five meetings. That victory came at the Stadio Olimpico in July 2020. However, Roma picked up comfortable wins both home and away against Udinese last season, scoring four goals and conceding zero.
Both Udinese and Roma will be looking for a positive response from their recent defeats in Serie A. However, we will have to stick with the hosts, as they have an excellent record against their opponents this weekend, and Mourinho will press home the importance of responding to Sunday’s setback to his players.
