There will be a big night in the Europa League for Irish side Dundalk FC this week, as they will travel to the Emirates to take on Arsenal in European competition. But, is there any chance that they could cause an upset?
All the good feeling surrounding Arsenal’s excellent start to the new Premier League season is quickly disappearing, as they have now lost their last two in the top-flight. The Gunners were beaten by Leicester City in their last fixture in domestic competition, with Jamie Vardy scoring the only goal of the game. Arsenal have also failed to score in their last two Premier League games.
However, they did get their Europa League campaign off to a perfect start last time out, as their only win in their previous three came against Rapid Wien. Arsenal went behind in that fixture after a goal from Taxiarchis Fountas just after the break. However, they managed to quickly turn the game around after goals from David Luiz and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. This will be seen as a must-win game for Mikel Arteta, as the pressure is beginning to build on his team ahead of their trip to Old Trafford this weekend.
Dundalk would have been proud of their performance despite being beaten by Molde in their opening Europa League clash. The Irish side took the lead in the first half through Sean Murray, but they were unable to hold on to the lead after second half strikes from Etzaz Hussain and Ohi Omoijuanfo gave the three points to Molde. This will be a fixture that all Dundalk fans and players will be looking forward to, but it’s unlikely that they will be able to lay a glove on the Gunners due to the gulf in class.
Arsenal will be without David Luiz, Rob Holding and Gabriel Martinelli for this fixture. Meanwhile, Willian is a doubt for the game. Nathan Oduwa and Dane Massey will both be missing for Dundalk for the trip to the Emirates.
This will be a huge challenge for Dundalk, as they are now used to coming up against teams of the calibre of Arsenal. Arteta will make a number of changes for the fixture this week as he looks ahead to the clash against Manchester United. But, they should still have enough to get a routine win against Dundalk.
