The EFL Cup continues this week, as the third round ties will be played across England. There will be an all-Premier League tie taking place at the Emirates, as Arsenal welcome Brighton to North London. But, can the Seagulls produce a shock result in the fixture?
EFL Cup Preview
It has been an excellent start to the new season for Arsenal, but Mikel Arteta’s attention will switch to the EFL Cup this week. It is the first game that the Gunners have played in the competition this term, as all teams involved in European competition enter at the third round. Arsenal has made it through to at least the quarterfinal stage in five of the previous six seasons, but they are yet to win the competition since 1993.
Arsenal played pretty well in the competition last season, as they managed to make it through to the semi-finals, before being beaten by Liverpool over two legs. However, the Gunners are a much more resolute side this term, and that is evident in the fact that they sit top of the Premier League standings.
Brighton should put up a strong fight against the Gunners this weekend, but their recent record in the competition isn’t exceptionally strong. The Seagulls have only reached the fourth round of the competition on two occasions in the previous seven seasons. However, both of their runs to that stage have come in the previous two seasons. But, Brighton is yet to win the EFL Cup in their history.
They faced no issues in the previous round of the competition, as they breezed past Forest Green in the second round. The Seagulls ran out 3-0 winners in that fixture, with Deniz Undav, Steven Alzate and Evan Ferguson scoring the goals.
Arsenal vs Brighton Head to Head
These two sides have met in domestic cup competitions on two occasions since 2013. However, Arsenal has claimed victories in both those meetings, scoring three goals in each victory. The most recent win came in the FA Cup in January 2015, with the Gunners winning 3-2 at the Amex.
Arsenal vs Brighton Prediction
Both sides are likely to make a number of changes for this fixture, as the start of the World Cup approaches. However, the Seagulls may be able to call upon a number of first-team players, and they could be good value to reach the next round of the competition.
