The reigning world champions are back in action in the early hours of Friday morning, as Argentina look for a third straight victory in World Cup qualification. The 2022 world champions will come up against Paraguay, who are yet to win in two matches in qualification.
It has been an excellent 18 months or so for Argentina, and they are nearing in on their 12-month anniversary of being world champions. However, the South American nation will turn their attention back to gaining their spot for the next edition of the tournament this week, as they come up against Paraguay on Friday morning.
Argentina have been faultless throughout 2023, as they have won all six of their international matches. The South American nation have made a perfect start to their qualifying campaign this year, and they come into this showdown after winning each of their last two. They have scored four goals across matches against Ecuador and Bolivia, with three coming in their success over the latter last month.
Paraguay will be hoping to end their long wait for an appearance at the World Cup, as they haven’t gained qualification since reaching the last eight of the 2010 tournament in South Africa. They have now failed to qualify for each of the last three tournaments, which came after gaining qualification for four on the bounce between 1998 and 2010.
They haven’t made the worst start to their qualifying campaign this year, as they have picked up one point from their two matches. Their only point was picked up in their opening match against Peru, before they were beaten by Venezuela last month.
Argentina have dominated the previous encounters between the nations, after winning on 59 occasions compared to the 16 wins registered by Paraguay. However, the reigning world champions have won just once in their last six against their rivals, with the most recent clash ending in a 0-0 draw in October 2021.
Argentina have made a strong start to their qualifying campaign, and despite poor results in recent seasons against Paraguay, we find it hard to overlook their clear claims to register a third straight win in qualification on Friday morning.
