Kosovo’s qualification hopes are hanging in the balance coming into the seventh round of matches in Group I. They will need to claim maximum points on the road this week to keep alive their hopes of reaching Germany next summer.
Two sides that look uncertain to gain qualification for the EUROs next summer will meet in the latest matches in Group I on Thursday. Kosovo can still manage to achieve that unlikely feat, but they will need to be perfect across their remaining four matches to stand any chance. At present, they sit fifth in the standings, and they are yet to pick up a victory in the group.
Kosovo have been challenging to beat to this point, as they have suffered just two losses in six outings. However, the fact that they have been unable to claim victory has been damning to their chances. The visitors come into this match looking for a response, as they were beaten 2-0 by Romania during the latest international window. That defeat was their second in three matches.
Andorra already look set to exit the qualification campaign at this stage, as they sit bottom of the standings, having picked up just two points from their six matches. Defensively, they have been weak throughout the campaign, as they have allowed ten goals. But, a victory on Thursday could see them move up to fourth in the Group I standings.
However, wins have been hard to come by over the last 18 months, as they have failed to land a victory in eight matches. Their standout disappointment came in the form of a 1-0 loss against Gibraltar last November. However, they would have taken confidence from a recent 0-0 draw against Belarus in the previous international break.
The only previous meeting between these nations came in March. On that occasion, there was nothing to separate the sides, as they played out a 1-1 draw in Prishtina.
It’s unlikely that either of these sides have the required quality to achieve qualification for the EUROs next summer. An entertaining match may be played out between these nations, but we struggle to see anything other than a second draw between the teams in Group I.
