What a game we have in store from the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday evening as Dutch footballing giants Ajax meet English Premier League rulers Liverpool. This Champions League Group D match is scheduled to kick-off at 20:00 GMT and will be shown live on television as one of the standout fixtures of the night. With both sides confident in their ability to launch their group campaign with a win it should make for an entertaining 90 minutes.
The history books show Ajax and Liverpool have met only twice before on competitive action and the Reds have never secured a victory. The head-to-head stats currently stand at one win for the Dutch club with one draw in the European Cup back in 1966. Ajax impressed with a 5-1 victory before holding their opponents to a 2-2 draw in England, but much has changed at both clubs in the five decades that have passed since. Will Liverpool get off the mark with a win over Ajax or will the locals continue their dominance with a home win?
Ajax are second in the Dutch league with a dozen points collected from the first 15 available to them this season. That tally leaves the home team a point behind early leaders PSV Eindhoven who are yet to taste defeat with Ajax have won four and lost one. The locals suffered the spare when going down 1-0 to FC Groningen on the road earlier this month.
That was a bitter blow in their title hopes but they did enough to bounce back to winning ways at the first time of asking and did it in fine style when hammering sc Heerenveen 5-1 at the Amsterdam Arena on Sunday. Tadic scored two goals in that game with the others coming from Kudus, Klaassen and dos Santos to blow away their opponents in what was the perfect preparation for this game.
Liverpool entered the season aiming to defend their Premier League title and return to the summit of the Champions League by regaining the trophy they won against Tottenham. Jurgen Klopp’s side haven’t been convincing in the opening few weeks of the campaign, however, and are without a win in their last two games. They sit third in the division with three wins, one draw and a defeat against their name. 10 points gained means the Reds are three behind leaders Everton.
The visitors were held to a 2-2 draw in the Merseyside Derby on Saturday afternoon at Goodison Park but were denied all three points by a late VAR decision. They took the lead and netted in the dying seconds of the game to go 3-2 up but officials pulled the decision back and the goal was chalked off, leaving followers of the Reds dismayed.
Home advantage gives Ajax their best chance of beating Liverpool and they have the quality to make it count. The Reds are challenged to bounce back from the weekend and claim an overdue win.
Ajax are 5 at 22bet with Liverpool 1.63 to win this match and the draw 4.18.
