It has been a miserable campaign domestically for West Ham United this term, as they narrowly sit outside of the bottom three in the Premier League. However, the pressure could be eased slightly on David Moyes if the current boss can maintain the Hammers run toward a major piece of silverware.
Despite their struggles in the Premier League this term, West Ham United remains one of the standout contenders to win the Europa Conference League this term. The Hammers have looked incredibly strong throughout the competition to this point, as they topped a competitive Group B after winning all six of the fixtures that they played. West Ham scored an impressive 13 goals across those matches, and conceded just four times.
However, the pressure has been rising on Moyes over the past couple of weeks, as there have been very few reasons to suggest that the Hammers will be getting back on track domestically. West Ham come into this fixture after a recent 4-0 loss on the road against Brighton & Hove Albion.
AEK Larnaca began the season in the Europa League, but they dropped into the Conference League after finishing third in the Group B standings. In the opening months of the season, they picked up just one win from six in the Europa League, and were held on two occasions. The side from Cyprus needed to overcome a playoff tie to reach this stage of the competition.
They were very professional across both matches against Dnipro-1, eventually landing a 1-0 aggregate success. Their only win across the two fixtures was recorded in Cyprus, with Angel Garcia netting the winner just six minutes from time in the opening leg on February 16.
This will be the first meeting between these two teams in a competitive fixture. The second leg takes place next Thursday, meaning home advantage will be crucial for Larnaca this week.
It remains hard to see whether West Ham can alter their fortunes in the Premier League. However, this could be a good fixture to see them get back to winning ways. The Hammers have impressed in the Europa Conference League throughout the season, and they should have far too much quality for their Cypriot opponents this Thursday.
