Serie A produces a four-game fixture list on Saturday with the headline act pairing AC Milan and Atalanta. This is a battle of two sides hoping to finish among the prizes this season and secure European football for next term. That should make this a fascinating 90 minutes of play shown live on television from 17:00 GMT.
These sides played out a tense 1-1 finish when last meeting, but it was Atalanta that took the bragging rights in the game before that. They did it in style too, easing to a 5-0 victory on their patch in December 2019. It’s worth noting this fixture has produced a total of 17 goals in the last five renewals. Will Saturday’s match fall into line and gift us another goal-fest?
AC Milan started the week top of Serie A after losing only of their first 17 league matches. 12 wins and four draws sent the home side into pole position with 40 points on the board, ahead of second place and derby rivals Inter Milan on goal difference. Juventus started the campaign as favourites to continue their dominance of Italian football but it’s now looking like a Milan shoot-out.
Their sole defeat to date came earlier this month when suffering a shock 3-1 at home to last season’s champions Juventus. Victory would have dented the Old Lady’s chances of recovering to challenge, but it was the experience of Juve that came good with goals from McKennie and a Chiesa double, enough to see off a reply from Calabria.
Atalanta started the week in sixth place despite being one of the pre-season favourites to challenge for a top-four finish and Champions League football for next term. They won nine and drew five of their first 17 outings, scoring 40 goals while conceding just 22. Atalanta rate amongst the highest scorers in the competition and boast an enviable defence.
They make this trip on the back of a stunning unbeaten run, winning three and drawing two of their last five. They followed three league victories on the bounce with a disappointing home draw with Genoa last Sunday, ending goalless despite creating the better chances. That will be remembered as two points dropped in their quest to finish in the top four.
AC Milan have the home advantage and are top of the league, but Atalanta carry the better recent form and will arrive in town confident of getting at least a point out of this game.
The visitors will set-up to defend and hit their high-flying hosts on the break. Milan must remain patient and disciplined if they are to continue their winning ways. Armchair fans hope this game lives up to the pre-match hype.
AC Milan are 3.42 to win with Atalanta 2.7 at 22bet in the match-winner betting. The draw has been marked up at odds of 2.43.
